The "Sagar Samman Award- Sagar Samman Varuna Award" scheme has been launched by the Ministry of Ports,Shipping and Waterways under the Directorate General of Shipping, Government of India aims to recognize exceptionally outstanding and lifelong contributions in the Indian maritime sector. Under this scheme, the highest level of national recognition in the maritime domain is provided to distinguished individuals or entities demonstrating leadership and excellence.

Eligibility
- The applicant should be an Indian citizen, Person of Indian Origin (PIO), or Overseas Citizen of India (OCI).
- The applicant should have at least 5 years of outstanding contributions.
- The applicant should have contributed significantly in at least 2 major maritime areas.
- The applicant should demonstrate leadership, innovation, and institutional impact.
- The applicant should have impeccable integrity and reputation.
- The applicant should be nominated by at least 2 entities or peers; self-nomination requires 2 recommendations.
- The applicant should not have any reputational or ethical issues.
- Government serving officers are not eligible.
