Details

The scheme “Gallantry Medal – PMG/GM” has been implemented by the Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India. It aims to recognise acts of gallantry and exceptional courage. Through this scheme, gallantry medals, a Presidential scroll, and monetary allowances are provided to eligible personnel of Police, Fire, Correctional, Home Guard, and Civil Defence Services. The scheme honours personnel who display conspicuous or rare gallant acts in saving life and property, preventing crime, arresting criminals, or preventing the escape of prisoners. The level of risk involved is assessed with due regard to the duties and obligations of the officer. The scheme covers two categories of awards, namely the President’s Medal for Gallantry and the Medal for Gallantry. There is no fixed quota for the number of awardees.

Ceremony Details The medals are announced on the occasions of Republic Day and Independence Day.

Eligibility

President’s Medal for Gallantry:

  1. The applicant should have performed a rare and conspicuous gallant act involving exceptional courage and skill.
  2. The act should involve saving life or property, preventing crime, arresting criminals, apprehending a prisoner, or preventing a prisoner’s escape.
  3. The risk incurred by the applicant is assessed with due regard to the obligations and duties of the officer.
  4. The applicant should be a member of the Police Service, Fire Service, Correctional Service, Home Guard Service, or Civil Defence Service.

Medal for Gallantry:

  1. The applicant should have performed a conspicuous gallant act of merit.
  2. The act should involve saving life or property, preventing crime, arresting criminals, apprehending a prisoner, or preventing a prisoner’s escape.
  3. The risk incurred is assessed with due regard to the official duties of the applicant.
  4. The applicant should be a member of the Police Service, Fire Service, Correctional Service, Home Guard Service, or Civil Defence Service.
