Details

The Transgender Welfare Board was established following the 2014 Supreme Court ruling in NALSA vs. Union of India, which recognized transgender individuals as a third gender. Launched in Uttar Pradesh in 2021, the board began issuing unique identity cards in 2023, covering approximately 137,465 transgender individuals across the state's 75 districts based on the 2011 census. The scheme aims to establish the identity of transgender individuals, provide them with constitutional rights and livelihood opportunities, and ensure their inclusion in mainstream society.
