The "Scheme of Cash Incentives to Medal Winners in International Sports Events and their Coaches", implemented by the Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports under the Department of Sports, Government of India, was introduced in 1986 to reward outstanding sportspersons for their achievements on the global stage. Over the years, the scheme has been revised to enhance its effectiveness. The latest amendment aims to streamline eligibility criteria, improve the disbursement process, incentivise higher achievements, and motivate athletes to serve as inspiring role models for the younger generation to take up sports.

Amount of IncentiveIn a team event In an individual eventFullThe number of participating countries shall be at least 12 or the maximum permissible number of participants whichever is lower.The number of participating countries shall be at least 16 or the maximum permissible number of participants whichever is lower. HalfThe number of participating countries is in the range of 6 to 11.The number of participating countries is in the range of 8 to15.One-thirdThe number of participating countries shall be between 4 and 5.The number of participating countries shall range from 4 to 7. Note: No cash incentive shall be given if the number of teams in any event is less than 4
For all international events except the Olympics, Paralympics, Asian Games, Para-Asian Games, and Commonwealth Games, cash incentives will be paid based on the number of participating countries.

Offline
Step 1: The sportsperson must submit the application through the Department of Sports’ designated portal within six months of the event.
Step 2: If all required details are already available, the application submission may be waived.
Step 3: Late applications will not be accepted; no relaxation is allowed for missing the deadline.
Step 4: The achievements of the sportsperson and coaches will be verified by authorised agencies or official databases before approval.
