Details

The SC/ST Atrocities Prevention Scheme implements the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989, as amended in 2015. It aims to provide justice to individuals from Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes who face discrimination, forced labor, humiliation, sexual assault, physical harm, and eviction from their agricultural land by individuals from non-Scheduled Castes or Tribes. Offenders can face imprisonment of a minimum of 6 months to life. The scheme also focuses on the social and economic rehabilitation of victims and their dependents. In Rajasthan, there are 31 special courts for Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes, and in the remaining two districts, district session judges have been designated as special courts under this Act. Special public prosecutors have been appointed to expedite these cases. A vigilance and monitoring committee has been established under the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Rules, 1995, with a nodal officer appointed at the level of the Secretary of the Government. Additionally, special officers are appointed at the level of Additional District Collector and District Magistrate in each district. Relief funds are provided to victims and dependents immediately through the District Collector and District Magistrate. The scheme also offers travel allowances, daily allowances, maintenance expenses, and transportation facilities to victims and witnesses. A toll-free helpline has been established for quick implementation of the Act, with numbers 1800-180-6025 and 1800-202-1989 or 14566 available 24/7.
