Details

Rajasthan is the largest state in the country, covering an area of 34.3 million hectares, of which only 16.8 million hectares is arable land. The state has 10.4% of the country's total geographical area but only 1.16% of the available water. Annual rainfall varies from 100 mm in the west to 900 mm in the southeast, with drought affecting approximately three out of every five years. The irregular and untimely distribution of rainfall leads to insecure crop production. Additionally, high-intensity rainfall can result in water runoff due to a lack of rainwater harvesting, causing groundwater levels to decline and arable land to turn barren. To address this critical issue, the state government has initiated the 'Rajeev Gandhi Jal Sanchaya Yojana' to maximize rainwater harvesting and ensure the judicious use of available water. The scheme aims to create awareness about water conservation, revive traditional drinking water sources, construct new water sources, and implement effective rainwater harvesting structures. It also seeks to increase groundwater levels, enhance irrigated and arable land, and expand green areas through extensive tree planting.
