Every year, the Department of Social Justice and Empowerment, Government of India confers the "National Award for Senior Citizens (Vayoshreshtha Samman)" to the eminent and outstanding senior citizens and institutions/organizations involved in rendering distinguished service for the cause of elderly persons, especially indigent senior citizens. The awards are conferred on 1st October every year by the Hon’ble President of India at Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi. The "Vayoshreshtha Samman: Best Private Sector Organisation in Promoting the Wellbeing and Welfare of Senior Citizens" award shall be given to the Corporate Houses, addressing the problems of the elderly either by providing them gainful employment, utilising their skills and experience to the benefit of society or creating infrastructure in geriatric medical care or any other similar step for the benefit of senior citizens as a community. The activities taken for the benefit of senior citizens should be away from the mainline business of the organization.

For the Nominee

A. The award shall be given to a Private Sector Organisation who have done work for the welfare of senior citizens.
B. To claim the award, the following conditions shall be fulfilled, namely:

  1. Addressing the problems of the elderly either by providing them gainful employment, or utilising their skills and experience for the benefit of society.
  2. Creating Infrastructure in geriatric medical care or any other similar step for the benefit of the elderly as a community.
  3. Having made arrangements towards the care of its former (superannuated) employees.
  4. Providing barrier-free for senior citizens at the workplace.

For the Nominating Agencies/individuals

  1. The Ministries or Departments of the Government of India and their autonomous organizations.
  2. The State Governments or Union Territory Administrations.
  3. Past recipients of Padma Awards, VayoshresthaSamman and other National Awards in both individual and institutional categories.
  4. Members of the National Council of Senior Citizens (NCSrC).
  5. Renowned Apex Chambers like the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI), Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), Associated Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ASSOCHAM), National Association of Software and Service Companies, PHD Chamber of Commerce and Industry etc.
  6. Any other category of persons or institutions authorized by the Ministry from time to time.
