Details
In areas with water scarcity, farm ponds are built, and geomembranes are fitted in them. This prevents rainwater from directly descending into the soil and allows for the storage and use of water during dry periods or when there is no rain. Farmers can use this stored water for irrigation, providing supplementary water to crops and increasing yields, while also helping to protect the groundwater. Under a pilot project in Banaskantha district, farmers built farm ponds at their own expense, and the government installed the geomembranes. These farm ponds have proven to be very useful. Following the success of this pilot project, a plan has been developed to fit geomembranes in the farm ponds created by farmers in other water-scarce areas, with the government covering the cost.
