Details

The Breed Improvement program is being implemented by the Animal Husbandry Department in the state for the conservation and development of indigenous breeds of cows and buffaloes. The current initiatives include: 1. Breed improvement through artificial insemination: Artificial insemination is performed on female animals using frozen semen from high-yielding indigenous breeds (Gir, Rathi, Tharparkar, Sahiwal, Malvi, Haryana, Nagauri, and Kankrej) and buffalo breeds (Murrah and Surti). A fee of ₹50 is charged for each artificial insemination of animals brought to departmental institutions. 2. Nationalized artificial insemination program: With the support of the Government of India, a nationalized artificial insemination program is being conducted in all districts of the state, providing free artificial insemination services for animals brought to departmental institutions. 3. Castration of unfit animals: This scheme involves the castration of unfit and unclassified bulls and calves to prevent them from breeding. 4. Infertility prevention camps: Each veterinary institution organizes two infertility prevention and veterinary camps every month, and multi-purpose veterinary hospitals conduct one camp each month to provide appropriate treatment for unproductive animals. The department aims to treat infertile animals to enhance their productivity and make them reproductive. The use of sex-sorted semen for artificial insemination is expected to increase the number of high-yielding female cattle/buffaloes. According to the budget announcement for the year 2024-25, under the scheme for the development of high-yielding animals and resolution of the issue of unfit male cattle, artificial insemination will be conducted at a subsidized rate of 75%. Traditional semen results in approximately 50% male and 50% female offspring, while sex-sorted semen is expected to yield about 90% female offspring. Due to the higher cost of sex-sorted semen compared to traditional artificial insemination, the state government will provide this service at a subsidized rate to maximize benefits for farmers.
